Parts of a fiber optic handle

Parts of a GERATI GB 300 fiber optic laryngoscope handle: hook-on connector, lamp housing, green ring, knurled battery tube and end cap
  1. 1Hook-on connector. Stainless steel, ISO 7376 fitting.
  2. 2Lamp housing. The LED lamp sits here.
  3. 3Green ring. Marks a fiber optic handle.
  4. 4Battery tube. Chrome-plated brass, knurled grip.
  5. 5End cap. Spring contact, spare GB-500.50 (adult).

Conventional or fiber optic handle?

A conventional handle has an electrical contact at the top. When a conventional blade is opened into the working position, the contact powers the LED lamp on the blade.

A fiber optic handle has the LED lamp built into its top. The light passes into the fiber guide of the blade, so the blade itself has no lamp or electrical parts. The green ring shows it belongs to the green system.

The two systems are not interchangeable. See the blades page to match blades and handles, or read fiber optic vs standard blades.

Choosing the size

  • Adult: full-size grip, 2 C batteries
  • Paediatric: slimmer and lighter, 2 AA batteries, supplied in neonatal and paediatric (-50) sets
  • Stubby: short handle, 2 AA batteries; can help when a full-length handle meets the patient's chest

Handle and blade choice for each patient is a clinical decision.

Batteries and power

  • Standard alkaline C and AA batteries, easy to buy in most markets
  • 2 cells in every handle: 3 V for the 2.5 V LED lamp
  • Batteries are not included in handles or sets
  • Rechargeable handles are not part of the standard range

Before cleaning or long storage, remove the batteries. Follow the instructions for use for reprocessing the handle.

Frequently asked questions

What batteries does a laryngoscope handle use?

GERATI adult handles (GB 200 and GB 300) take 2 C batteries. Paediatric and stubby handles (GB 202, GB 203, GB 302 and GB 303) take 2 AA batteries. All give 3 V. Batteries are not included.

What is the difference between a conventional and a fiber optic handle?

A conventional handle has an electrical contact at the top that powers the lamp on the blade. A fiber optic handle has the LED lamp built into its top and carries a green ring. The two systems are not interchangeable.

Will GERATI fiber optic handles fit other brands' blades?

GERATI fiber optic handles are designed for ISO 7376 green-system compatibility. Test samples with the blades already used in your hospital or market.

What is a stubby laryngoscope handle?

A short handle. It can help when a full-length handle meets the patient's chest, for example in patients with a large chest. Handle choice is a clinical decision.

Do you make rechargeable handles?

Rechargeable handles are not part of the standard range. All GERATI handles use standard C or AA batteries, which are easy to buy in most markets.

Which spare parts are available?

Spare LED lamps (GB-500.20), battery handle caps for adult handles (GB-500.50) and paediatric handles (GB-500.55), and carrying cases (GB-500.100 and GB-500.100C).
